Hot Fun In The Summertime

While missles and bombs are falling like rain in faraway climes one wonders if it is appropriate to be having such a good time. Maybe yes, maybe no, but perhaps it serves us to be mindful of the transitory nature of our stay here...
So who would guess that we would have fun at a watermelon festival on Boston Common organized by a group called life is good who raise money for disadvantaged kids. We did have some fun. BIG THANKS to Joe Klompus for filling in on bass, and next time we will bring our own soundman. WHOOO!

I woke last night to the sound of thunder...
Well actually a medley of Bob Seger Tunes. But I guess that is what you get when you devote an evening to the music of the Detroit Croaker, the Michigan Mahler. You see our friends Barry and Tim had this idea for a show they would call "The Seger Sessions". The name sounded so good we couldn't resist stealing it.

I got no quarrel with the East Coast, you want people they got the most
Hence we knew that many Bob Seger fans would be in attendance. Though perhaps there was a little too much...

swayin' to that smoky beat.
For example the tambourine solo in Old Time Rock n' Roll that took out a couple of microphones and a bass, or the head-butt when Dinty was shown a red card for a banjo violation. But you just have to...

Let a cowboy ride!
For some we sang songs that had been waiting a lifetime to be sung. Before the show not all of us were Seger fans, and that probably hasn't changed much.

We got tonight
Yes we had the clarinet for the riff on Turn the Page

There we go again...
Thanks to Andrea Gillis, Sean Wortis, Tim Gearan, Mark Chenevert, Tom Dube and all the closet Seger fans ( like Susan Scotti) who came out for one glorious evening. As was expressed by one who was there:"That was fucking great! Just don't do it again."

Friday night followed hard and fast. We were honored to have Dennis Brennan as our special guest, and he sure showed us around the table if you know what I'm sayin'. Like an old school master painting us a picture, peepin' and a hidin' like he's Jimmy Reed. I look up and he's acting out one of Sandman's stories while singing Morphine's Thursday. He was Wild and Blue, Washing His Hands in Muddy Water, singin' about The Master's Bouquet and The Point of No Return. And then there was this song I don't know the name of (Maybe lost Kid Blues?). I've never heard it before and I may never hear it again, but it will stick with me always. Thanks Dennis what can you say about spending an evening with the master?

We regret to report that one of our session stalwarts, americana guest extraordinaire is moving away to Nashville. But at least we got a double dose of her singing and playing on Friday night, and Saturday afternoon as well at the Davis Sq. Artbeat Festival. All the best to you Jordan Caress, the Boston music scene will miss you.
We also had regular guest Rose Polenzani up for a couple on Friday night. Everything was fine as we sailed through Floppy Tulips, but as Rose attempted to start the La La Song (that is what we call it) things got a little dicey. Ry claimed that the pump organ was loaded as he pressed the keys inappropriately. And it was just moments later that Mr. Staples made an attempt on the accordian (without a liscence I might add). Though victimized by our noodling, Rose pulled off a stellar version. Thanks again to all the staff at the Lizard Lounge. See you in August.
