Year In Review 2011

Decemberists, Down by the Water

Down by the water is the song I have chosen for the Session Americana year in review extravaganza. I don't really know what it's about but it's got a really good beat and if I wasn't sitting down I could probably dance to it. But really the biggest reason I like the song is that it mentions someone being dolled up in gabardine, which is truly my favorite fabric on earth. Of course I am assuming the songwriter is talking about vintage gabardine (which is the only type of gabardine worth mentioning) from the 40's and 50's when they combined wool with rayon acetates in a way that cannot be replicated today because of cost and environmental concerns. I actually had on vintage store owner tell me once that the factory with the 'secret' formula inside burned down in the late fifties. Well I don't know about that but it hangs on the wearer just so and the colors can't be beat.
oh yeah and there's harmonica in the song too....
