This is about as "Americana" as it gets. This tune has grit, guns, girls, blues and money packed in tight and rocking. Of course, Dave Alvin is a great hero of mine. He was keeping the roll in rock right through its darkest hours of the mid 80s - The Blasters, X... He's a rare triple threat - amazing playing, singing and writing.
Johnny Ace is one of his story songs, rock and roll historical fiction if you will, based on the story of Johnny Ace's demise by his own hand. This track isn't breaking any new ground for sure, but it sounds like it should. It has great feel, great vocal, and is a hell of a lot of fun from start to finish. -Ry
