Laurie Sargent

Laurie Sargent
Laurie's set included many songs of local Boston infamy and obscurity. Of course, the Cars "Lets Go" was made as rootsy as possible without loosing the groove. David Champagne's Treat Her Right classic "I've Got a Gun" seemed somehow timely with the Vice President's ridiculous shooting of one of his buddies in recent news. (I am having a little trouble with the party line of "accidents happen" in reference to this incident. The same people who despise Teddy Kennedy for his behavior around the Chappaquidick accident are completely letting the VP off the hook. Maybe "Excitable Boy" by Warren Zevon would be a good pick for the next show.  I digress...)

Laurie also took us through an eerie version of Jonathan Richman's "I'm Straight" from the first Modern Lovers record, the Neighborhoods' "Prettiest Girl," Rufus' "You Got the Love" (with the "mando-orchestra").  Laurie's own song "Love Divine" was really fun to play. She really has some great songs, half of which were never released because of some idiotic major-label hassles. I think it's worth having those records in the proverbial ipod, though, so hassle her if you want some.

The Sonny and Cher cover "Baby Don't Go" duet with Jimmy rounded out the set. We actually learned the Dwight Yoakam version so we didn't have to suffer through Sonny and Cher while learning the tune.
